The new ‘Project Maths’ Leaving Certificate course aims to develop the mathematical knowledge, skills and understanding needed for continued education, life and work. There is an increased emphasis on developing problem-solving skills and on pupils using their mathematical knowledge to solve problems in familiar and unfamiliar contexts. The new course focuses on teaching pupils to be able to work with, manipulate and analyse data, and to interpret patterns and trends.
The syllabus will be composed of five strands:
- Statistics and Probability
- Geometry and Trigonometry
In studying these five strands, it is hoped the learner will develop key skills in the following areas:
- Information Processing
- Working with others
- Critical and Creative thinking
- Being personally effective
The aim of the course is to take Maths from theoretical to practical, to give pupils a positive attitude to Maths and to appreciate that Maths is involved in almost all areas of life.
Pupils taking higher level Maths will gain 25 extra points under the CAO system, if they attain a grade D3 or higher.
