Ooh la la! Do you know your bon mot from your bonbon?  Increase your skills in another language! Leaving Certificate French builds on the basics developed in the Junior Certificate programme to improve a pupil’s competency across four basic disciplines: reading, writing, listening and, of course, speaking. The pupil learn to communicate competently in French, while also gaining an understanding of French culture and lifestyle, through modern language learning in the classroom and through the use of educational software in the modern languages computer room.

Written work at ordinary level continues on from tasks assessed for the Junior Certificate. At higher level, pupils begin to write more complex pieces, such as short essays on topics of interest to young people.

Aural and reading skills are honed throughout the two years of the course, and pupils' spoken French becomes more fluent. The oral examination is a core component of Leaving Certificate French.  It consists of general questions and a brief presentation on a chosen subject called “le document”. Pupils also have the opportunity to participate in French debating at the Alliance Française and to take part in linguistic exchanges in France.

The French department is dynamic, enthusiastic and committed to encouraging all pupils to find a “joie de vivre” through studying French. We teach our pupils to appreciate French culture and traditions. There is a strong emphasis on the use of French in the classroom. Holy Family Secondary School has a strong tradition of pupils who continue on to study French at Third Level.
