The Nutcracker; TY visit the Ballet
On Wednesday, November 20th last, the four TY classes attended the opening night performance of The Nutcracker ballet in the Gaiety Theatre, Dublin. I speak on behalf of all the fourth years when I say it was an amazing production with a fabulous set. The dancing was extremely beautiful and elegant, as to be expected from 16 of the top dancers in Ireland, and the accompanying music provided by the RTE Concert Orchestra was magnificent. Tchaikovsky’s magical prelude got the crowd expecting something amazing and they were not disappointed. A sweet addition to the evening was music from The Supertones, the junior choir affiliated to Dun Laoghaire Choral Society, which some people thought was wonderful but others didn’t quite think suited the atmosphere.
The story centres around Clara, a little girl who gets a toy nutcracker on Christmas Eve. At the stroke of midnight, Clara wakes up to scenes of battle between the Mouse army and the Toy Soldier army led by the Nutcracker. After a narrow victory, the Nutcracker and Clara travel through a magical winter wonderland featuring the Land of Sweets, the Sugar Plum fairy, Arabian dancers, flower dancers and a gorgeous candy castle. Clara awakes on Christmas morning under the Christmas tree with her Nutcracker still in her arms and the memories of the magical night before indelibly printed in her mind. By coincidence, our president Michael D. Higgins was in the audience on the night,
All in all, the ballet was absolutely exquisite. It was a breathtaking and very different experience for many of us.
