1916 Commemorative Evening

A 1916 commemoration night to remember in HFSS; a school community proud to re-imagine and remember.

We hosted a wonderful evening of music, poetry and dramatic monologues in school on Friday, 11th March as we marked the 100th anniversary of the 1916 Rising for our school community.

Our students delivered dramatic monologues representing key female figures from Easter 1916; Countess Markievicz, Mrs Pearse, Bessie Burgess, Nurse Elizabeth Farrell and Grace Gifford Plunkett. The students were resplendent in period costume and spoke with dramatic clarity and conviction.

The 1916 Proclamation of the Easter Rising was read by pupils and our modern day version of a Proclamation for modern Ireland was also read (available to read in full on our school website www.holyfamily.ie)

James Durney and Mario Corrigan from the Kildare local history (Kildare County Council) gave a presentation about the Rising and the audience were treated to recently released Pathe footage of Dublin during the Rising.

Our choirs, trad band and school orchestra performed a haunting version of ‘O Ró Sé do Bheata Bhaile’, 'The Foggy Dew', ‘Danny Boy’, ‘Grace’ and the beautiful finale of ‘Ripples in Rock pools’. It truly was a wonderful night to remember 1916.
